http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=301

Overview:  Being able to fluently read common vocabulary words can make reading easier and lead to greater comprehension. This lesson is most appropriate for kindergarteners or first graders. The lesson uses a popular children's song that contains several high-frequency vocabulary words to assist students in recognizing, reading, writing, and using the words in several contexts. Students sing the song repeatedly, while following along with a picture book that contains the lyrics and illustrations. They are then encouraged to participate in several hands-on activities to reinforce learning of the vocabulary words.

Telling a Story: Young Children Write Autobiographies

http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=421

Overview:  Developing ideas collaboratively, planning writing projects before executing them, and learning to compose sentences related to a specific topic are all important skills for students to master. This lesson plan teaches these skills while drawing from the lives of first- and second-grade students who will write and publish autobiographies based on personal photographs. The lesson begins with the students working at home with their families to select and record relevant information about photos. Students then work in small groups and independently to create their autobiographies.

Descriptive Writing and the 100th Day of School

http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=891

Overview:  Learning to write nonfiction text is an important literacy skill for children to learn.  This lesson guides students in writing descriptions of 100th Day Bottles they create at home.  They will write clues about their bottles for a guessing game, practice descriptive writing and create a class book.

Action ABCs: Vocabulary Learning With Verbs

http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=918

Overview:  Students are likely to know many more words than they use in their writing. This lesson is designed to help students better use their vocabulary by teaching them what verbs are and then helping them access verbs they already know and use them in sentences. Students begin by reviewing the definition of a verb. Then they work together to brainstorm and create lists of verbs for each of the letters of the alphabet. Using some of these vocabulary words, students create pages for an Action Alphabet book that includes illustrations and sentences for each of the words.

Reading Informational Texts Using the 3-2-1 Strategy

http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=

Overview:  In this lesson, students in grades K–2 learn to use the 3-2-1 strategy to assist them in comprehending informational texts. After teacher modeling, students read a magazine article independently and use the 3-2-1 strategy to comprehend what they read. This strategy can be adapted and used with older students as well.
